The legs on the bottom allow you to place it directly over the heat source, without stifling the heat. This is ideal when you want to use the Dutch Oven in the age-old way with heat from above and heat from below. You then place the Dutch Oven directly over, for example, briquettes and place briquettes on the lid. In this way, you can use your pan similar to an oven.
