Pizza prepared in a skillet on the BBQ

Discover a new dimension of taste: baking pizzas on a barbecue

Baking pizzas on a barbecue is an exciting and flavourful way to enjoy your favourite dish. With the right temperatures and a few handy tips, you can achieve crispy crusts and deliciously melted cheese. Discover how to bake your own pizzas on the barbecue and add a new dimension to your culinary adventure.

The first step for baking pizza on a barbecue is to preheat the barbecue. Aim for a temperature around 350°C or at least at least 260°C for best results. This allows the pizza to bake quickly and evenly, with a deliciously crispy crust.

When using a gas barbecue, you can set the burners at the bottom to medium to high. This ensures an increased temperature inside the barbecue. For a charcoal barbecue, you can use a generous amount of charcoal and spread it evenly on the charcoal grid. This helps create the required heat.

It is important to keep an eye on the cooking time, as it can be shorter on the barbecue than in a traditional oven. The higher temperatures make for faster cooking time. Turn the pizza regularly to ensure it cooks evenly.

With pizza baking on the barbecue, you can experiment with different toppings and flavour combinations. Add your favourite sauces, cheeses and ingredients to make your own unique creations. The smoky flavour that the barbecue gives to the pizza adds an extra dimension of flavour that you are sure to appreciate.

Recipe for Pizza prepared in a skillet on the BBQ

Time: dough 2 hours, pizza 20 min
People: 1-2
Pan: VH30H, VH30 + VH.LID30

Ingredients for the pizza dough:

  • 300 g flour
  • 1 teaspoon dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 180 ml hot water
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

Ingredients for the pizza:

  • 120 ml pizza sauce
  • 200 g grated mozzarella
  • Toppings of your choice (e.g. pepperoni slices, diced peppers, onion slices, mushrooms, olives, etc.)
  • Olive oil, to grease the skillet

Instructions for the pizza dough:

  1. In a large bowl mix the flour, yeast, sugar and salt.
  2. Slowly add the warm water and olive oil to the flour mixture. Mix everything well until a dough forms.
  3. Dump the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a bowl lightly greased with oil and cover with a damp cloth. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in volume.

Pizza instructions:

  1. Preheat the BBQ on high heat. Make sure you have a well heated BBQ for this recipe, around 350 degrees. Baking a pizza from 260 degrees also works, but the preparation may take a little longer. It is important to keep a close eye on your pizza.
  2. Lightly grease a large cast-iron skillet with olive oil. This will prevent the pizza from sticking to the skillet.
  3. Roll out the risen pizza dough on a lightly floured surface so that it is the size of your skillet. The dough should be about 0.5 cm thick.
  4. Carefully place the rolled-out dough in the greased skillet. Press it gently to cover the bottom and sides of the skillet.
  5. Place the skillet on the BBQ and close the lid. Bake for about 2-3 minutes, or until the dough starts to solidify and the bottom becomes slightly firm.
  6. Turn the pizza dough in the skillet using tongs or a spatula. This will allow you to bake the other side and add the toppings.
  7. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the partially baked dough, with a small border all around. Sprinkle the grated mozzarella over the sauce.
  8. Add your desired toppings on top of the cheese layer. Be creative and use your favourite pizza toppings.
  9. Place the skillet lid on top of your skillet and bake the pizza for another 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the crust is golden brown. If you don't have a lid for your skillet, you can also close the lid of your barbecue.
  10. Carefully remove the skillet from the BBQ with bbq gloves

Now it's time to enjoy your homemade pizza with crispy crust
